Normal No unusual fire-weather or evacuation concern. Go about your day; keep your go-bag current.
Prepare for Evacuation Conditions are elevated. Load your go-bag in the car, plan your route out, and stay reachable.
Evacuation Recommended Leaving now is strongly advised, especially for anyone who needs extra time. Roads are still open.
Evacuation Order Mandatory. Leave immediately by your planned route and follow LAFD direction. Do not wait.
Fire-weather rating
How dangerous the weather itself is for fire — separate from the canyon’s evacuation status.
Low Normal caution.
Moderate Yardwork before 10am; no open flames.
Elevated No outdoor power tools; check your go-bag.
Red Flag Official NWS warning — evacuate on official order.
PDS Red Flag “Particularly Dangerous Situation” — the rare, most severe NWS designation for extreme, life-threatening fire weather. Treat evacuation guidance as imminent.
Wind direction — why it matters
Onshore (W/SW): ocean → inland. Cooler, more humid. Favorable for the canyon.
Sundowner: down-canyon evening winds. Warm, dry, gusty. Elevated risk.
Santa Ana (NE/E): desert → coast. Hot, very dry, strong gusts. The dangerous scenario.
